Curatorial Reading

Conceived between Hale Arpa’s Aegean island studio in Imbros (Gökçeada) and Istanbul, “Imploration III” (2012) is a sumptuous masterwork in acrylic and collage on paper (110 × 170 cm (43 × 67 in)). Layering torn textured papers, gouache, and oil pastels, Arpa reconstructs the elemental geometry of the Aegean coastline—where Homer placed the oceanic rest of Poseidon.

The interplay of vibrant vermilion, olive green, and cobalt azure produces an intoxicating tactile richness. “Imploration III” dissolves the boundary between domestic sanctuary and cosmic myth, celebrating life, literature, and the radiant Mediterranean sun as eternal companions to the creative soul.

Core Symbolism
Aegean mythic memory; geological layers of Mediterranean landscape and classical literature intertwined with daily life.
Emotional Resonance
Sensual radiance, lyrical nostalgia, mythic grandeur, and sun-drenched tranquility.
Art Historical Dialogue
Mediterranean Lyricism, Matisse's late cut-outs, and Homeric coastal literature.
