Premiered during Hale Arpa’s landmark 1994 Paris exhibition at Galerie Philippe Gand, “Search (Inner Horizon)” (2005) constitutes a defining achievement of her career. In this monumental work (acrylic on canvas, 40 × 47 in (102 × 119 cm)), the visual field is dominated by an all-consuming ocular presence that subverts the traditional passive role of the painted subject. As Del Guercio celebrated in his critical review, the painting ceases to be an object observed; rather, it turns its penetrating sight back onto the spectator.
The tectonic tension between warm terracotta ochres and electric ultramarines creates a pulsating visual field. “Search (Inner Horizon)” does not present a conventional portrait, but an existential mirror—dismantling the boundary between interior consciousness and external reality with unflinching formal mastery.
